Ingredients

3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 3/4 cup flour

1 cup sugar

1 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

1/8 tsp cayenne

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 cup chocolate chips

1/2 cup melted unsalted butter, cooled

1 cup buttermilk (or 1 tablespoon vinegar and enough milk to equal 1 cup total, let sit for 5 mins)

2 teaspoons vanilla

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350F. Oil a 9-inch round cake pan and flour the pan, tap out the excess flour.

Combine cocoa, flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, cayenne, cinnamon, and chocolate chips.

Whisk together buttermilk, butter, and vanilla. Stir into the dry ingredients until all is moistened and mixed well. Cake mix will be very thick.

Transfer batter to cake pan, spreading the thick batter out to the edge.

Bake for about 30-40 minutes, until the cake has risen and a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool for 5 to 10 minutes before cooling on rack.

Top with Chocolate Chip Almond Frosting.
